Home of the James P. "Skip" Viglirolo Rink
The Belmont Sports Complex replaced the town's former rink, which closed in 2022 after multiple mechanical failures. Officials called the complex the rebirth of two demolished buildings, the old Viglirolo rink and the James Paul White Field House, and its ice is the James P. "Skip" Viglirolo Rink. Viglirolo, a lifelong Belmont resident and acclaimed hockey coach, served in the Korean War and worked more than 50 years in the town's Parks and Recreation Department; he died at 95.
Bleachers seat 208, with five accessible seating spots and skate-changing seats for recreational and youth skaters, and opaque windows let a little sunlight onto the ice. The building uses photovoltaic panels for solar energy and is Freon-free, and it has a community room and four locker rooms dedicated to the high school.
Belmont Recreation, Belmont Youth Hockey and the Skating Club of Boston all run programs on the ice. Former Bruins captain and Hall of Famer Zdeno Chara came for the opening weekend.
