Gunzo’s Hockey Headquarters Morton Grove

Hockey shop

Gunzo’s Hockey Headquarters Morton Grove storefront
The curved corner building on Dempster Street that houses the Morton Grove store, with the Gunzo’s sign over the windows.

Gunzo’s Morton Grove store is the largest of the three, in a curved corner building where Dempster Street meets Birch Street, and inside the floor is painted like a rink. It serves the hockey towns of the northern suburbs: IceLand in Niles and the Skatium in Skokie are each about two miles away, and American Heartland Ice Arena in Lincolnwood is three.

Sharpening works on a walk-in basis, so most players simply bring their skates in and wait. The shop’s sharpening page is a good primer for new hockey families: it explains why new skates come dull, how a deeper hollow trades speed for grip, and the fingernail test for a worn edge.

Gunzo’s is a hockey shop first, and its own page sends figure skaters to a figure specialist. For a big skate purchase on a weekend, come early in the day, when the fitting area is quieter.

Sharpens: hockey. Not stated: goalie, figure, speed / long-track, recreational & rental.
