McFetridge Sports Center is the Chicago Park District’s indoor ice and tennis complex on California Avenue, on the North Side between Avondale and Irving Park. It has a full rink with a 1,200-seat bleacher area and a smaller studio rink, and it is busy with learn-to-skate classes, synchronized skating, freestyle ice and youth hockey.
Skate sharpening is one of the building’s own amenities, so a family in a public session or a class can have skates done on site instead of making a separate trip to a shop. The rink prices new skates separately from skates that have been sharpened before, so mention it if the pair is new.
For more choice of gear, Gunzo’s on West Madison and Johnny’s IceHouse West’s pro shop are about a quarter of an hour south, and American Heartland Ice Arena’s counter in Lincolnwood is about five miles north.
