Detroit's Rockefeller-style rink on the Field of Mars

The rink sits in Campus Martius Park, which was dedicated on November 19, 2004, with two performance stages, sculptures, public spaces and a seasonal ice skating rink. It was designed to resemble the Rockefeller Center rink in New York City, but it is larger. Magic Ice USA has operated it since it opened. The park is also the site of the city's annual Christmas tree lighting, held the Monday before Thanksgiving.

The name comes from the Latin for Field of Mars. After the Great Fire of 1805, Campus Martius was the focal point of Judge Augustus Woodward's plans to rebuild the city. The original park covered several acres but was lost in the 1900s as downtown was reconfigured for traffic. At 1.2 acres, today's park is smaller than its predecessor, because a full restoration would have required demolishing several buildings. A medallion in the walkway marks the point of origin of Detroit's mile roads: Seven Mile Road lies seven miles to the north.
