Home of the Capitals and the world's biggest hockey stick
Cowichan Valley Arena is a 2,040-seat multipurpose arena joined to the Cowichan Community Centre. The community centre was built in 1978 on the former site of the Cowichan Curling Rink. The arena is home to the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Hockey League. Upstairs, Heritage Hall serves as a hall of fame for the Capitals and the professional players from the Cowichan Valley. In November 2008 the Capitals and the centre's commission bought a centre-ice scoreboard to bring the arena up to Junior A standards. The Vancouver Canucks held training camp in the Cowichan Valley in 1980, 1984 and 1986.
For years the arena's east wall carried a 62-metre hockey stick and puck that Guinness World Records declared the world's biggest. Built in 1985 in Penticton and modelled on Tony Tanti's stick, it first stood at the entrance to Expo '86. It was dedicated in North Cowichan on May 21, 1988. Guinness first favoured a wooden stick in Eveleth, Minnesota, then reversed its decision on July 12, 2008. The stick was dismantled in 2024 because its structure had decayed.
