The Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society traces its roots to the Skater's Club of the City and County of Philadelphia and the Humane Society of Philadelphia. The Humane Society was organized in 1770 to rescue people from drowning. Founded in 1849, the Skater's Club was the first skating club in North America; its members skated on frozen rivers and lakes. On February 28, 1861, it became the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society. Club rules still require members to carry a reel of stout twine for lifesaving when they skate outdoors.
In 1910 the club moved to the Philadelphia Ice Palace at 45th and Market Streets, where it hosted the national championships in 1924 and 1934. In 1921 it was one of the seven original clubs that formed the United States Figure Skating Association. In 1937 the club bought land from Haverford College, and its own rink in Ardmore opened in 1938. It hosted the North American Figure Skating Championships there in 1941 and 1949. Its best-known competitors include Olympic champions Dick Button and Scott Hamilton.
The rink is built for figure skating, with abundant natural light, a wall of mirrors, no boards and no hockey teams. Each September it holds the Challenge Cup, a U.S. Figure Skating National Qualifying Series event first held in 1982.
