Two NHL-size sheets in Short Pump, once the training base of pairs champions Bechke and Petrov
SkateNation Plus began as SkateNation of Richmond West, a Family Golf Centers rink in the same building, which in 2000 was the first twin skating facility in Richmond. It was a 240-seat, 70,000-square-foot training facility with two NHL-size surfaces of 200 by 85 feet, a ballet studio, a full-service retail store and an arcade and party area.
In those years it was the home training centre of 1997 World Professional pairs champions and 1994 Olympic silver medallists Denis Petrov and Elena Bechke, and of World and Olympic coach Valentyn Nikolayev, whose students included Viktor Petrenko and Oksana Baiul. It was also the expanded home of the ECHL Richmond Renegades and their Jr. Renegades youth program.
Today the building in Short Pump has 44,000 square feet of ice alongside laser tag and an arcade. It is home to the Richmond Figure Skating Club, and the Richmond Generals, a junior and youth hockey organization, play here.
