Saint John arena named for speed skater Charles Gorman, New Brunswick's first Winter Olympian
Charles Gorman Arena is a year-round City of Saint John facility for ice hockey, ball hockey, box lacrosse and special events. It has heated seating and a canteen. Saint John named both the arena and a street after Gorman, and a monument to him by sculptor Claude Roussel stands in King's Square park.
Charles Gorman (1898–1940) was a Canadian speed skater who competed at the 1924 and 1928 Winter Olympics. He dominated North American speed skating in the mid-1920s and was known as the Man with the Million Dollar Legs and the Human Dynamo. In 1926 he beat Olympic champion Clas Thunberg of Finland to win the ISUA World Outdoor Speed Skating Championship. He held seven world records when he retired in 1928. He died in 1940, and at his funeral thousands lined the streets of Saint John to pay their respects to New Brunswick's first Winter Olympian. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1955 and the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.
