Sault Ste. Marie home of the NOJHL's Soo Thunderbirds, who moved here from the Essar Centre
The John Rhodes Community Centre has a community ice surface of 85 by 185 feet and an NHL ice surface of 85 by 200 feet, with 350 seats in each arena. It is home to the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, who moved here in 2017 after playing at the Essar Centre. That move came after local businessman Darren Smyl took over the team's operations to keep it from leaving. In 2021 Smyl sold the team to former NHL player Trevor Daley, Cole Jarrett and Lee-Anne Jarrett.
The Thunderbirds first ran from 1978 to 1982, started by Zoltan Kovacs Sr., who came to Canada from Hungary in 1956, to keep more young players at home. They won three International Junior B Hockey League championships in those years. In 2012 the team won the NOJHL title and the Dudley Hewitt Cup, then reached the Royal Bank Cup semifinals in Humboldt. It won back-to-back NOJHL titles in 2014-15 and 2015-16, and a second Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2015.
