Balo Sports

Ski, bike and skate shop

Balo Sports storefront
The Balo Sports storefront on Bowood Avenue, with its awning and a $10 skate sharpening sign in the window.

Balo Sports is a small all-season shop in Lawrence Park, a few doors off Yonge Street, that tunes skis and snowboards in winter, fixes bikes in summer and sharpens skates year-round. It is the kind of place a family on the north side of midtown walks to with a bag of skates on a Saturday morning rather than a specialist hockey store.

Skates go through an automated CAG One machine, and the shop invites you to pick your own hollow: shallower if you want more glide, deeper if you want more bite. If you are not sure, tell the staff how you skate and how often, and ask them to note the hollow on your receipt so you can ask for the same cut next time.

York Mills Arena is the closest indoor rink, under 3 km away, and Leaside Memorial Gardens is a short drive east.

Not stated: hockey, goalie, figure, speed / long-track, recreational & rental.
