Newson's Bike & Skate Exchange

Skate sharpening

Newson's Bike & Skate Exchange storefront
The beige front of Newson’s Bike & Skate Exchange, its name painted across the top above the phone number and web address, with bikes lined up along the railing by the open door.

Newson’s is a bike and skate exchange on Jane Street, and the skate side of the shop runs on trading up. Families bring in skates a child has outgrown and get credit toward a better-fitting pair, new or used, which makes it a sensible first stop before the season starts.

The sharpening menu is written for both sports. Figure skaters get a B grind meant for combined dance and jumping work, and hockey players can ask for a flat-bottom V. Blades can also be given a custom radius on a CAG One machine.

Staff measure feet before suggesting a pair rather than guessing, and new boots can be heat-fitted in a Blademaster oven. Worn eyelets, loose rivets and pressure points are handled at the same counter.

Rental skates go out by the day, already sharpened and with guards, which suits a weekend on an outdoor rink or a school trip.

Lambton Arena is about a kilometre away, and Chris Tonks Arena is under 3 km.

Sharpens: hockey, figure, profiling / contouring. Not stated: goalie, speed / long-track, recreational & rental.
