Georgetown's fountain rink on the Potomac

The rink is in the plaza of Washington Harbour, a complex on the Potomac River at the Georgetown waterfront. It is a fountain built to become an ice rink in winter, added when the plaza's old elliptical fountain was replaced. MRP Realty said the renovation had been planned since it bought the complex in 2010. M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates designed the fountain and rink, and Clark Construction was the general contractor. The rink opened in November 2012. At 11,800 square feet, it was the city's third skating rink and its largest.

Washington Harbour was designed by Arthur Cotton Moore, with two curved towers and three other buildings in the postmodern style. Construction began in November 1981 and was complete in June 1986. It was preceded by a seven-year zoning and legal battle over the Georgetown waterfront, which led to the creation of Georgetown Waterfront Park. The complex has a first-of-its-kind set of floodgates against Potomac River floods. In 2011 a failure to use them properly caused a major flood, which led to a lawsuit and a renovation.
