Built in 1961 as East Kildonan's garbage incinerator, converted to the Kimberley Arena in the early 1970s
Skating temporarily paused The City of Winnipeg's arena page says Terry Sawchuk Arena has been temporarily closed from October 13, 2026 and that free public skating there is suspended during the closure; it expects to be available again on a date to be determined following an assessment. Official schedule update
Terry Sawchuk Arena was built in 1961 as the City of East Kildonan's garbage incinerator, designed by Libling Michener and Associates. It could burn more than 100 tonnes of garbage a day, and its monopitched roof and sculptural windows and stairs won an Honourable Mention in the 1961 Massey Medals in Architecture.
In the early 1970s the building was modified and extended to become the Kimberley Arena, and for some years its former job earned it the nickname “Incinarena.” It was later renamed for Terry Sawchuk, the Winnipeg-born goalie who won the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967.
The arena has one 85-by-200-foot sheet of ice and a capacity of 743, and the River East Royal Knights of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League play their home games here.
