Hamilton's arena for referee Bill Friday
Lawfield Arena was renamed the Bill Friday Lawfield Arena on April 6, 2017, in honour of the Hamilton referee. Friday never played at the arena, though his children did. He had played minor and Junior B hockey in Hamilton, his hometown, before he became a referee.
Friday started in the NHL as a linesman in the 1959-60 season. He refereed 1,425 major league games and is the only referee to work both the WHA's Avco Cup Finals and the NHL's Stanley Cup Final, which he worked six straight years from 1967 to 1972. In 1969 he became the first president of the NHL Officials Association. He was an inaugural inductee of the Hamilton Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and was elected to the WHA Hall of Fame in 2012. He died in Hamilton on May 13, 2024, at the age of 91.
