Stoney Creek's 1990 arena addition
Valley Park Community Centre first opened in 1982, and the arena came in 1990, when the City added it and an aquatics complex to the existing recreation centre and library. Valley Park Arena was one of the home arenas of the Stoney Creek Warriors junior hockey team, along with Stoney Creek Arena and Market Street Arena. The Warriors were first formed in 1974 in the Niagara & District Junior C Hockey League. In the summer of 2013 the team was sold to a group in Ancaster and became the Ancaster Avalanche.
The centre closed for renovations in July 2019, and the City has put about $14 million into the project. The work replaced the roofing and the HVAC, repaired the exterior cladding and block, and added a new arena dehumidifier, barrier-free washrooms, a new reception desk and expanded programming space. A grand re-opening was planned for July 2022. The City calls it one of the busiest recreation centres in Hamilton.
