Sixty years of junior hockey in Thorold
The Thorold Community Arena has one NHL-sized pad. The Thorold Jaycees joined the Niagara District Junior B Hockey League in 1963, three seasons after the Thorold Mountaineers folded. The team became the Paper Bees in 1975, the Thorold Paper C's in 1979 and later the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks were league champions in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005, and in 2005 won the Sutherland Cup as Ontario's best Junior B team. Notable alumni include Nathan Horton, John Scott, Zenon Konopka, Dwayne Roloson and Owen Nolan.
In August 2016 the City announced that the club's old logo would be barred from its arenas from June 1, 2017. At a pre-game ceremony at the arena on November 3, 2016, the team unveiled its replacement, a stylized head of a black bird of prey. Renovations to the Thorold Community Arena sent the Blackhawks to the Vale Centre in Port Colborne for the 2022-23 season. In May 2023 the club made the move permanent, ending 60 years of junior hockey in Thorold.
