Niagara-on-the-Lake's two arenas in Virgil
Niagara-on-the-Lake's two community arenas, Centennial Arena and the Meridian Credit Union Arena, stand in Virgil. The Meridian Credit Union Arena is home to the Niagara Predators of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League. The Predators came to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the 2021-22 season, after the 2020-21 season was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The team began as the Toronto Predators, a GMHL expansion franchise, in February 2013. They played their first game on September 7, 2013, at home against the Orangeville Americans. Mitch Hebert scored the first goal in team history just five seconds into that game. After their first season the team was taken over by Robert Turnbull, a longtime general manager and president of the Hamilton Red Wings. Before the 2017-18 season the Predators moved their home games to Canlan Ice Sports – York in North York.
