Strathcona County's biggest recreation centre
Millennium Place is the largest multi-purpose recreation centre in Strathcona County. The Workun Garrick Partnership, in a joint venture with Hutchinson Architects, designed it for the County. The design brought together a twin arena, a leisure ice rink, twin indoor soccer pitches, an aquatic centre with a 25-metre lap pool, a gymnasium, a running track, child care and a fitness centre. The project cost about $22.2 million and was completed in February 2001. The same firm later came back for an expansion that enlarged the change rooms and added an aerobics area.
On the ice side there are two NHL-size sheets and a leisure skating pond. Each of the two arenas has four change rooms, an officials' room and an upper mezzanine with bleacher seating, for 234 in one and 515 in the other. The ice is set up for sledge hockey, with accessible spectator viewing in all areas. Beyond the ice, the centre has a wave pool, a gymnasium and an indoor playground.
